It is often said that when something is for everything, it is for nothing. It’s hard to disagree with this thesis – well, unless we’re talking about felt. It is one of the materials that prove that you can use something in a variety of ways and get the desired effect.

Widely used felt works well in, among others, footwear, textile, construction and even military industries. From shoe inserts and handbags, through metal polishing brushes, to helmet lining and weapon transport – the examples could be multiplied. Therefore, we must admit that it would be strange if such a multifunctional material was not among our resources. As it turns out, technical felt (also called industrial felt), which is one of felt varieties, is one of the best raw materials for converting. A coincidence? Not at all!

Technical felt – what does industry value it for?

The secret of technical felt is the increased content of synthetic fibres thanks to which it is more resistant to adverse factors than its basic form. We could definitely say that it is like felt “on steroids” – stronger, tougher, more durable. Consequently, it is much less susceptible to tearing or deformation, and this offers new possibilities and applications that modern industries dream about.

Technical felt is particularly appreciated in the furniture sectorFelt pads installed underneath furniture provide excellent protection against scratching whereas felt pad bumpers prevent furniture dents and chipping, e.g. due to too rapid door opening . They are also used in the production of upholstered furniture, where both softness and high strength matter.

Industrial felt application

Industrial felt is an excellent soundproofing, insulating and shock absorbing material for all types of equipment and machines used in various industries. It is worth noting that each model of a given device has different dimensions and requires a closely fitted felt format. The task of converting is therefore to prepare a product of such parameters that will correspond to the design of the specific machine, e.g. in order to damp vibrations or to seal.

A part made of technical felt can also be used as a dry bearing or sleeve, protecting the mechanism against seizure, corrosion or simply rapid wear. This is a good solution, because it is cost-effective – especially bearing in mind the regrettable consequences of machines working without sufficiently strong protection resistant to friction.

The electronic, electro-technical and household appliances sectors also benefit from the use of industrial felt. Here, absorption and thermal insulation properties of felt are mainly useful. Thanks to the above properties, this material is suitable for the production of gaskets protecting equipment from dust or adverse temperature, damping vibrations and soundproofing.
